yeah, im up early. cant sleep. Just wondering what you guys think of religion in general. I was raised Catholic and I reckon i use its teachings to generally outline my way of life. Do i take the bible literally? NO. Im no religious zealot/fanatic, Nor do I think anyone should tak e it that way. Stuff gets twisted and bended to suit ones needs/wants. As far as killing in the name of________. I think its ridicoulous. post your thoughts and ill post mine as I awake from my slumber.. :D |

Oh one of my favorties subjects! Just in brief, I do think religion has done more harm than good. Religion is just a system of beliefs, and the rituals associated with admininstering those beliefs. The beliefs can exist and be practiced without the religious constraints. Tell me one good thing about religions and I'll tell you five bad things. There are certain truths which cannot be debated, they just are, no matter how you try to twist it. It is those truths which I use to guide myself. Some of those truths can be found hidden in the mire of religions, some are not, because they don't fit into a particular religious agenda. Its time to end religion, and let the Truth shine free. |

true. i was just talking about this to my buddy. its more engraved in my mind than anything else. ive been to different friends churches and to me, it seems all wrong. I felt guilty and like I was cheating on my own Catholosism, even when I went with an open mind. lol I do think religion is a good thing, to a certain extent. |

Catholicism is the most hypocritical religion on the face of this earth. I detest it with a passion. |

I detest catholisism too! But I think evangelical christian sects are far worse! I agree with what Jesse said, but have you noticed it is the MONOtheistic religions that cause more harm than good? That do evil things in the name of god? Polytheistic religions like buddhism and hinduism seem very peaceful to me and dont seem, from what I know of them, to do any harm. |

I agree Michele. I do also agree that Catholosism is corrupt. I do agree with its base teachings, though t I reckon its how far you take it. I take it as face value and Ive upset many a relative. Do i think there was a burning talking bush? NO! Do I believe everything (basically ) that is fun is bad? NO If you follow it by the book, you will lead a miserable life. for jesse. :kizzzzzz |

I'm with you on monotheism Michele, but some of the polytheistic religions of the past have been very bloody, calling for human sacrifices. |

Religion is ridiculous!!!!! Believing in something with no proof is not faith, it's stupidity and brainwashing. Not blind faith just blind. Religion is used too often as an excuse for doing bad things. Always has been back through history and still is. Everytime these topics come up I post the same thing, but as time goes on I'm more and more sure of my answer and feel it more strongly. My background is that my grandparents on my mothers side were very religious, went to church every sunday and did lots of work for the church, my grandad used to wind the church clock, climbing high into the rafters even when he got too ill to do it. My grandma kept her faith even when my grandad died aged 65. Now my grandparents weren't perfect but they were good people. I especially have memories of my grandma being really friendly to everyone when we went out in the village, she knew everybody! But she would have been this way if religion didn't exist. I suppose my point is that for individuals religion can be a comfort, it can be their chance to get out and meet people at church, get involved in community, feel good about themselves. But the bigger picture is a negative one. Elton John recently said all religion should be outlawed because of its intolerance for gay people, I'll try and find it online. |

honestly? I think its pointless for everyone to say that religion should be "banned" and "outlawed" and "et the truth shine free" because know what? IT WONT EVER HAPPEN. The human race is stubborn as hell and very set in their ways. Yes, religion may become less of a part of out lives but no it will never be erased. There are too many people out there who define their lives by their religion or the only reason they're LIVING is because of religion. I think everyone makes way to big of a deal about religion, if you dont like it then dont like it, if you like it then like it, but you dont have to push your opinion on other people. Sadly, that IS what religion is about (aside from all the positive aspects, and there ARE positive aspects) -religions want to expand and "spread the word." So, theres a full circle. The non-religious wont stop pushing THEIR views, the religious wont stop pushing THEIR views, and that will never end. |

It WILL happen! I'm staking all of my spiritual aspirations on it!
Persecution past and present, prejudice, hatred, violence, lies, bloodshed....all in the name of RELIGION! Gays can't get married in the USA, land of freedom and democracy, because of RELIGION. Gay bashing, be it taunting or beatings or murder is committed by ignorant people, but that ignorance was as a result of their RELIGIOUS upbringing. Good white Christians still had black slaves! They spread the good word while denegrating blacks! The KKK misuses the bible to spread their message of hate! Religion is very much a part of our lives whether we practice it or not because so much lobbying and legislation and lawmaking is often made with religious viewpoints in mind. From anti-gay marriage proposals here to entire dictaships in Muslim countries. Peace will come to this earth when Jerusalem, Mecca, and the Vatican are destroyed and their religions crumbled under the weight of their bullshit! |

I agree with Jesse but I also agree with Larisa in that I highly doubt that religion will ever be completely banished from human society. |

We'll see when the aliens slither out of hiding and the very foundations of human thinking is shattered! I long for that day and the major religions of the world who know there are aliens fear that day! The Vatican keeps close watch on the skies though they need to turn their eyes to where the hide here on earth. Bring on the aliens, let religion crumble under the revelation, and then the Truth shall begun to be seen. 2012 bitches!

well I doubt that aliens would convince most religious diehards that god does not exist. Then people will just say "god created the entire universe, including life on other planets" |

I am sure there would still be christmas because christmas has very little if anything to do with religion anymore anyway. It is a commercial holiday. |

Sure Jane, we'll just change its name like the Christians did. Who says the coming of aliens would signal the death of god? No, like you mentioned, it would expand the notion of god, expand it beyond the narrow minded boundaries of religion. |
